About this Program: Adapting the model developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn to a weekend format, we will meet for four sessions held every other week on Sunday from 10:30 am to 2:00 pm (3 1/2 hours). We will not meet on March 23, Easter Sunday but rather the following Sunday, March 30. There will also be a full day mostly silent retreat held from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m on Sunday, April 6 also at the Lotus Room which will be our last meeting. (21 hours total in-class time plus daily homework of 45 to 60 minutes).
This program can change your life. Many who have completed a MBSR program report marvelous shifts in their ability to cope skillfully with life's challenges. They report long-term improvements in dealing with physical and emotional pain. And as you might expect, such significant and lasting shifts require disciplined effort and determination.
You will be provided with four CDs and handouts for daily 45 to 60 minute practice sessions at home and are encouraged to attend all seven sessions and the daylong retreat. Change in one's live, even healthy change, requires effort. The group environment and weekly meetings will certainly support your efforts, but, ultimately, success in this program depends upon your commitment to yourself and your willingness to do the necessary work. We will help support you every step of the way as you make changes, changes that can lead to less stress and more calm and centeredness in your life. More about MBSR.
This program will provide the tools and supportive framework for cultivating mindfulness in daily life just as in weekly MBSR programs. In addition, this weekend program's longer in-class sessions and homework periods allow time to highlight three common areas of concern: Intimate Relationships, Physical and Emotional Wellness. We will use focused experiential exercises, interactive dialogue and additional study materials in developing: (1) effective strategies for establishing mindful habits for overall health, pain management and long-term maintenance of healthy body weight, (2) effective communication skills, (3) self-management of anxiety and anger during stressful interpersonal interactions, (4) models of healthy, growth-oriented relationships, (5) methods for using mindfulness to facilitate deep emotional healing.
The topics of our four sessions will be:
1. the basics of mindfulness practice (e.g. sitting, walking and eating meditation)
2. bringing mindfulness into our daily health habits (e.g. stress management, eating and exercise)
3. bringing mindfulness into our intimate relationships and everyday interpersonal interactions (e.g. open, effective communication, deep sharing)
4. using mindfulness to facilitate emotional healing (e.g. resting safely in mindful awareness while old emotional energy is brought up and released).
