About this Program: This program is an adaptation of Jon Kabat-Zinn's popular Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction program with a particular focus on bringing Mindfulness into one's Intimate Relationships. Five sessions are two hours long and are held once a week on Monday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. The sixth session is a full day, mostly silent retreat held from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m on Sunday, March 4 also held at the Lotus Room. (17 hours total in-class time plus daily homework of 45 to 60 minutes).

The trials that face couples in modern society can prove harmful to relationships. Mindfulness, the practice of bringing one’s attention to the experience of the present moment, without judgment or reactivity, can be a foundation upon which a strong and resilient relationship is built.

Based on a growing body of clinical and non-clinical research, this program has the potential to change your life. Many who have completed a MBSR program report marvelous shifts in their ability to cope skillfully with life's challenges. They report long-term improvements in dealing with physical and emotional pain. And as you might expect, such significant and lasting shifts require disciplined effort and determination. In this adaptation of this program targeting committed relationships, we will integrate sitting mediation, walking meditation and mindful Hatha yoga with communication-skills-building and other relationship-enhancement information and experiential exercises into the standard program.

This program is designed for anyone who has an interest in learning about the process of mindfulness and how this process can utilized to positively impact intimate relationships. It is open to committed partners regardless of sexual orientation or marital status as well as singles seeking to learn more about establishing deeply satisfying, growing intimate relationships.

You will be provided with four CDs and handouts for daily 45 to 60 minute practice sessions at home and will be encouraged to attend all seven sessions and the daylong retreat. Change in one's life, even healthy change, requires effort. The group environment and weekly meetings will certainly support your efforts but, ultimately, success in this program depends upon your commitment to yourself, your current or future partner, and your willingness to do the necessary work. We will help support you every step of the way as you make changes, changes that can lead to less stress and more calm and centeredness in your life while deepening the sense of comfort, connectedness and belonging with the significant other in your life.
